I settled in my seat at Gate #9 at the Orlando airport waiting for my early morning flight to Santo Domingo. With nearly 15 minutes to boarding, I crunched into a juicy, sweet apple. Shortly after, I halted my chewing to hear the announcement: Ladies and Gentlemen the aircraft is in need of minor mechanical repairs. No estimate how long it will take. We will be boarding another aircraft. It will depart from Gate 4.
While a herd of people rushed off, dragging their suitcases on wheels, I dropped the apple core in the Ziploc bag, looped my purse on my shoulder, and grabbed my white cane.
I stood beside the seat to face a deserted gate. Not soul breathing near me. Gulp.
What direction to walk? Where to go? Who to call? Would anyone from the airline realize they had a passenger who needed assistance?
Have you been there? The whole world rushes off to their gate of happiness. And there you are, holding the white cane of longing, of yearning, wondering what direction to go?
That happens to us when we are busy, enjoying the apple of life. Then to our surprise, maybe years later, we realize we’re at the wrong gate. And we’re there alone. All others seem to have found their way to fulfillment and satisfaction while we’re stuck.
But God, who operates the aircraft of the universe, calls a different gate of departure. And like the rep from the airline who eventually came to offer me assistance, God offers the same guidance and help. He knows the correct flight; the stops that we need to make, and He also knows the destination.
But honestly, friends, do we accept His help? Not always. I’m speaking from experience. Years back, I would have dismissed His helping hand. And instead, hopped in the airplane of pride, thinking I had it all together, and, trusting in my abilities and daily horoscope, I rode among the turbulence of emptiness, of anxiety and fear.
But that fear He knows. He sees. And He makes the announcement clear: “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11).
Father, how often I was at the wrong gate, the incorrect place with mistaken plans and desires. I now live trusting that the plans you have for me include hope no matter what dark moments I face, and also include a future brighter than my dreams. In Jesus’s name, amen.
