Trials of Today, Treasures for Tomorrow is divided into three main sections:

The Witness (Part 1)

With candor and detail, Janet relates her dreams for the best in life – searching for romance in college, success in her career, happiness in her marriage. Instead, gloom, disappointment, and heartache awaited her. But God’s passionate love turned the deepest pain to healing and devastating tragedy to triumph.

Excerpt from Chapter 1

…my father left Bolivia in May 1964, determined to begin a more promising way of life for our family in the U.S. The struggles he faced, beginning with his inability to speak English, the drastic change of the weather, the unfamiliar culture and intense loneliness were overcome by his tenacious determination. He managed to reach all the goals he had set in just eight short months.

In the meantime, while waiting in Bolivia, my mother’s excitement increased. She had read Mark Twain’s books about Tom Sawyer’s adventures on the Mississippi River. The idea of settling in St. Louis, a city that would bring her close to the places and adventures described in these books added to the anticipation of living in this new land.

The long-awaited day arrived on December 11, 1964. My mom, my brother, 11 and I at 12 headed to La Paz’s airport to board the airplane that would take us to reunite with my father…

Excerpt

As Gene held my hand on the table, he would use my fingers to trace an imaginary map of the interior of our new house. His explanations would begin with, “Pretend that this is where the kitchen is, and pretend this is the…”

Likewise, there was a time when I was in the “pretend” stage of my life as well. I was eager to please everyone around me, first my parents, then my teachers, then my friends, my husband, and even my children. I guess in the end I didn’t really know whom to please; even worse I thought that I was pleasing myself by pleasing them. So I pretended that I was making them all happy at one time or another.

But as I strived to please them, I wasn’t being rewarded in proportion to my giving. So I pretended to be satisfied, to be “complete.” But I really wasn’t. So what was the problem…isn’t that the job of a wife and mother to make the family the first priority? Here was my answer…

The Study (Part 3)

A unique Bible study that equips women to find God’s answers for personal trials. The questions spark discussion that helps women resolve tough problems through God’s Word. For individual or group study.

Excerpt from “Facing Adversity”

Jan’s life was touched by adversity, some of which could have caused despair and devastation.

How would you have handled each situation if you were in her shoes?

    • Her blindness
    • The betrayal of her husband
    • The financial stress
    • The death of her son

If she didn’t know Christ, where would you direct her for guidance? If the Bible weren’t your first choice, what would be another option? What would you have done differently if you were in Jan’s situation?

God’s input:

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while,
if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the
genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than
gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found
to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,
— 1 Peter 1:6-7

The LORD will guide you continually,
And satisfy your soul in drought,
And strengthen your bones;
You shall be like a watered garden,
And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail
— Isaiah 58:11

Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying,
“This is the way, walk in it,”
Whenever you turn to the right hand
Or whenever you turn to the left.
— Isaiah 30:21
