Six Ways God Removes our Fear

“The pain was so bad.” My friend called on the phone. “I was ready to get some booze for relief.”

“You don’t drink,” I said.

“I know. I had to cover the pain somehow. But the minute I was getting my car keys to head to the liquor store, the pain would be gone.” She added “Do you think that was God giving me a message?

Her sense of humor is unique.

But the fact we often try to ease life’s pain isn’t so unique. Secretly, we try to relieve it by denying what hurts. We try to mask what is ugly. And we try to dismiss the wrong in our lives.

But as much as we try, fear shows up like warts in unwanted places. And what do we do with fear? Fight it? Overcome it? Or become imprisoned by it?

Or you can do what Heather did to celebrate freedom. After encountering a deadly lung cancer diagnosis, she survived and chose to celebrate. She hosted a gathering of friends. They placed their fears on a plate and threw them in a bonfire. Details here.

But if we don’t have a bonfire, God has His own ways to burn traces of fear. Here are six of them:

1. He gave us the spirit to conquer fear (2 Timothy 1:7).
2. He reminds us He’s with us (Matt. 14:27).
3. He makes sure we lack nothing (Psalm 34:9).
4. He’s present during troubled times (Psalm 46:1-2).
5. He extends His mercy (Luke 1:50).
6. He assures He will deliver us from all fears (Psalm 34:4).

Father, when I tried to cover up my fear with tasks, work, distractions and busy activities, fear still came back. Thank you for taking care of our fears in ways we cannot. I will live in freedom from fear as you deliver me from them all. In Jesus’ name, amen.

• What has you afraid today?
• How does God expect you to deal with your fears?
• How can you exchange faith for fear?
