They place fruit inside a clear container. The monkeys smell the ripened fruit, stick in their thin arms and grab a fistful. Because the opening is narrow, they cannot pull their hairy hand back out. That’s when a net is draped over them. And voila! They’re captured.
Have you been there? Me, too. When we hold tight to self-pity, the net of gloom is bound to cover us. When we hang on to discouragement, the net of despair is ready for us. When we grip resentment for old wounds, the net of bitterness is ready. And when we hold on to our own ways, the net of frustration is hovering over us.
We’re trapped maybe because we’re not any wiser than those monkeys. But good thing God knows our stubborn heart, our foolish ways and our human weakness to let go. We long for freedom, yet our grip is tight.
But when the moment comes that we admit we’re tired of the confinement, when we choose to be liberated, and when we look up to Jesus who promised to set us free, the trap is released. “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).
How about you? What do you long to be freed from? Would love your comments.
