Secrets for a successful wedding.

The bride looked beautiful and wore a mischievous grin as she walked down the aisle. She carried a secret few knew. She wished her wedding to start on time. So, the only way to achieve that was to send two different invitations. For the Latina friends and family the invitation stated the wedding would take place at 12:00pm. And for the rest of the guests, the invitation stated the wedding to begin at 2:00. Smart move. All guest had arrived and the wedding started on time—2:00.

Latinas seldom arrive on time. But in life, it’s one thing to be late. It’s another to be unprepared. Which of these groups described below would you fit in?

At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.

The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’

‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. Later the others also came. ‘Sir! Sir!’ they said. ‘Open the door for us!’

But he replied, ‘I tell you the truth, I don’t know you.’ Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour (Matthew 25:1-10).

Father, although I don’t know when you’ll be back. I don’t know the day or the hour. But while I wait, show me the urgency to wait, to keep watch and be prepared. In Jesus’ name, amen. • Is the lamp of your heart filled with commitment to Him? • What keeps you watchful till the day He comes back? • Which group of virgins do you identify with? A Mother’s Day Message from Janet Perez Eckles

By Shawn Rossi

Was it Mother’s day…or misery day?

That was what rumbled in my mind as a Mom of my 3, 5 and 7 year-old sons. I was having a pity party. No one came.

And the loneliness was about to sink me in…until this message resonated in me: blindness didn’t have to define who I was, adversity didn’t determine my success as their Mom, nor would frustration dictate my mood.

Instead, the power of God in me nudged me to believe, to trust and succeed. Now that my two sons are grown and one is in heaven, I see my mothering days as the message-in-the-making to all moms: each day brings its challenges, but each moment is the channel through which God’s grace flows, pouring strength, passion and purpose.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Janet

What is life’s purpose?

By Zoran Skaljac

Last Wednesday, my dear friend and I stepped into a nice hotel nestled in the busy part of Miami, near the airport. She put a large gift basket in my hands. “I think they left this for you.”

What a lovely surprise! And on the night table was a stand with a copy of my new release, Simplemente Salsa, to be launched at EXPOLIT (an annual event for publishers, bookstores, music artists and distributors—an event to huge for my brain to take in).

I removed the cellophane, lifted items out of the basket and grinned with delight. Then a thought slipped in my head: that’s what heaven will be like—we step into the room Jesus prepared. A delicious and delightful gift waits for us. And beside it, there it sits—the book we wrote with our lives.

A lovely thought…until we examine what would fill the pages of that book. Gulp.

Would it highlight the accomplishments of our life? Would it show the details of what we bought? Would it relate the stuff we accumulated? Or will it illustrate that we simply loved God with all our heart, mind and soul?

The time to step into that house in heaven isn’t far. So we assess the writing. We edit our days and correct any mistaken worry. And with resolve, we erase any unfounded fear. And blot out ways that lead us from God’s path. And definitely, take out any hints of worldly whims and empty desires.

So, being a little bold, may I ask: what will your book contain? Will you page through and smile with its contents as it’s displayed on the night table in the house Jesus prepared for you? In case the changes are extensive, Jesus says: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you” (John 14:1-2).

Father, let me fill the pages of my life’s book with entries that make you smile, bring delight to you and form a sweet fragrance unto you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

• What are you writing with your life?
• Do you ever ponder on the purpose of your days?
• Is there anything you need to have Jesus delete from the pages of your book?

How to find the truth.

Courtesy of: altankoman

“You’re a fake,” a new friend said to me. She did…to my face.

What else could I do, but laugh?

Actually we both laughed because of what she added, “I don’t think you’re really blind. You handle yourself so well. Put on your own make-up, fix your hair…I can’t believe you’re blind.”

What a sweet compliment. She became my new best friend.

But what she doesn’t know is that there was a time when I was a real fake. Sighted and fully confident—on the outside. But a confused chica rumbled inside.

Confused because I thought attending church every Sunday would make me good. My degrees would bring security. Popularity would bring joy. And a good figure and a decent wardrobe would bring confidence.

Not so. I looked around for that truth, one which would fill my soul and ease my longings. Then, it happened. My eyesight closed in and my spiritual eyes opened. I read the truth. The truth that gave me life—rich and kept me dancing with meaning:

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

Father, so many options to follow and so many voices that whisper the way to truth. Thank you for the eyes you gave me to see the only way, the only truth and the only life is found in your Son Jesus. In His name I thank you.

• How long have you been looking for truth?
• What is the truth that fills your heart?

Three secrets to find the perfect house.

House-2

Was it beautiful? Gorgeous? Or simply stately? All of the above describe my friend’s home on an exquisite location on one of the scenic Florida canals.

But what also impressed me was the sound system. The oldies played. And the catchy melody followed you to the pool area, inside, in the kitchen, the bedrooms. No matter where, the sweet tunes played.

Then I stopped. Goodness gracious. I had the same sound system deep in my heart. Here is what it played:

1. A bit ashamed to admit. But decades ago, when I disregarded Jesus’ power and swam in the pool of my own abilities and accomplishments He reminded me: “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished” (Proverbs 18:5).

2. When I walked in the bedroom of fear, insecurity and uncertainty, God’s Word played: “I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears” (Psalm 34:4).

3. I stepped in the kitchen where all my passion and love poured into preparing the best life for me. But His word said: “’Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind’” (Matthew 22:36-37).

Father, thank you for evicting me from the house of destructive pride and inviting me to dwell in your house of security. My fears are washed away. And my insecurities cleaned. I relish in my dwelling where the home is covered by the insurance of life eternal with you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

• What melody plays in the rooms of your heart?
• In moments of fear who comes to your rescue?

How to keep a pure heart.

Used with permission from Microsoft.

“Quick, Honey,” I said, “get your shoes in the closet, and make sure the remote controls aren’t all over the place.”

The videographer from a local TV network affiliate was about to arrive. And the clips were to be used as part of my intro as I keynoted an event.

So I dashed around to and fro making sure the house was pretty tidy.

Crazy isn’t it? Why don’t I worry about cleaning my heart, my attitude, my habits and complaining tendencies instead?

That should be my priority as God doesn’t need a video camera. He’s already there sitting on the sofa of my heart. He’s observing where I put my faith. Where I tucked my trust. And how much joy I stored in this life of mine.

I made a decision—to make sure my heart is tidy “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him (II Chronicles 16:9).

Father, even though my life isn’t perfect, my flaws are evident, my weaknesses real, help me to have a heart that is perfectly clean for you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

• What needs cleaning up in your life?
• What will you do to make the needed changes?
• What will fill your heart today?

The secret to overcome guilt.

“You are wiser than you know,” I said to my friend.

But she replied, “Here is why I know I am falling short on wise counsel—cuz I tend to blame everyone else but me. When I can’t find my car in the parking lot, my first thought is NOT to think that I could have misplaced it…it is to wonder who would have the nerve to steal a 15-year-old car. Naturally, the result is that I forgot where I put it.”

My problem is contrary to my friend’s. I tend to blame myself for all that might go wrong. Correction: I used to be that way. The “I’m so dumb,” or “I did it again” or “how could I have done or said that” rumbled in that worried head of mine.

Finger Point

Used with permission: purpleslog

The blame, the negative self-talk left me drained, exhausted really. The outcome was a dried up, withered chica, thirsty for acceptance and approval. And to make things worse, I placed my head on the pillow of guilt at night.

Jesus knew. And He offered the way to rinse out self-damaging notions. To wash out tainted self-talk. And instead, refresh our soul with living water.

“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him” (John 7:37-38).

Father, I rejoice because of the freedom that flows in me. Thank you for washing out self-destructive blame, guilt, and unfounded remorse. I will live hydrated by your living water and with my heart drenched with your unconditional love. In Jesus’ name, amen.

• What keeps you drained lately?
• What do you thirst for?
• When will you allow Jesus to set you free?

Three ways to find peace while we wait.

Worry
Worry (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I waited and waited outside the doctor’s office. All patients had left, and my patience was about to do the same.

The waiting room was empty. Where is my hubby? I thought. He’s usually prompt to pick me up no matter where I’m at.

I usually try to be an understanding and gentle wife (emphasis on the try. I squirmed in my seat. So many things to do. So many chores to accomplish and there I sat idle. UGH!

Fifteen minutes passed. I pulled out my cell. “Hey, where are you,” I asked.

“In the parking lot. Waiting for you to call me when you’re ready.”

What? He was right outside the door the whole time?

You’ve done the same, no doubt. You might have thought God was far. Wondering if He’s coming to your rescue. And squirming a bit, the waiting gets uncomfortable because the pain is too deep.

That’s when anxiety comes in the waiting room of your heart and fear settles beside you.

While we wait, here are three ways to bring down the heat of anxiety:

1. Be certain that God is watching.
2. Be reassured He knows the details better than you.
3. Be confident He’s at work with the solution.

He’s not far. He’s right outside the door of your pain. And His whisper is meant for your aching heart: “The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:5b-7).

Father, how foolish I feel when I fretted while waiting for an answer I wanted, for a solution I expected, and a result I longed for. How sweet to know you’re never far, you listen, you know and your peace is ready to guard my heart from harmful anxiety and fear. In Jesus’ name, amen.

• What answer have you been waiting for?
• What fills your heart during the waiting time?
• How can you embrace the peace He gives while you wait?

What’s burning in your life?

“Help,” I called out trying to hold back my frustration. Hubby walked in the room. “What’s wrong?” I let out a big huff. “The computer froze again,” And hubby, who’s also my hero fixed the problem with a few clicks. As he walked out of the room, I said, “Hey big guy, I just couldn’t do it without you.” He came back in and whispered, “That’s how I designed it.” I laughed. But in my head that same message echoed faintly. God said the same to you and to me. He designed our lives so we couldn’t make it without Him. So we would need Him. So we could rely on Him. So we could call upon Him in times of trouble. He designed our lives with detailed preparation. With a purpose and a plan. But being a tad stubborn, we dash off to follow our own plans. And that’s when our life freezes with disappointment. We’re stuck in the futility of our own whims because God said, apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.” John 15:5 But as always, God gives the saving alternative: “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” John 15:7-8 What remains in you-a desire to go after your goals or a passion to go after His grace? Quote for the day: “On the way to triumph, you can view each step as a struggle, or strive to see the power of each step.”-Janet Perez Eckles

Is your heart in trouble?

“Thank you, honey,” I said to hubby as he placed in my hands two huge rolls of freshly baked French bread. I placed them on the top shelf of the fridge thinking that would be perfect for our dinner guests. And being the zany chica that I am, I dashed off to my tasks. Days later, preparing dinner for my guests, I searched for the bread. There they were still wrapped in the paper bag. I pulled them out. But Ugh! They weren’t soft as when he brought them. , if I should strike my counter with them, no doubt, the tile would crack. Why didn’t I put them in a plastic bag and freeze them? Hardness is not a strange thing to me. There was a time when my head, my thinking and attitude were as hard. And, to make it worse, unaware of my stale condition, I came wrapped in a paper bag of pride. What a package I was for God. What would He do with me? Hardened, unappetizing in His sight. Too stale for any use. But rather than toss me in the trash, or feed me to the birds, He was gentle. He was kind. He was patient and held me in His arms of love. I softened, and He poured His sweet mercy upon my flaws. He filled me with compassion upon my stubborn heart. And spread forgiveness for my sins. “Blessed is the man who always fears the Lord, but he who hardens his heart falls into trouble.” Proverbs 28:14 What condition is your heart in today? __ Will you tell me what you think? I love, love your comments. www.janetperezeckles.com
